SLEEPAWAY CAMP REUNION

October 18th , 2001. "The films' first time on the big screen since 1984!!! "

XXXXXThis was one of those film experiences where I thought the movie was a total piece of crap but had a great time watching it. This was "Plan 9" bad, and I couldn't figure out if it was on purpose.

XXXXXI remember seeing the VHS box on video store shelves and thinking "I'll never waste my time watching that crappy 'Friday The 13th' knock-off!" I didn't understand why the Alamo was programming this as if it were a cult classic of some kind. I almost avoided it but my friend "Quint" had set this screening up, and he said it was one of his favorite movies, so I gave it a shot.

XXXXXOn a technical level, the cinematography and sound were much better than your typical slasher, clean, well lit images without the grainey "snuff film" look that most 80's horror movies had. And on the plus side, I have to admit that this is the first, if not only, summer camp movie where the campers were actually kids. Seeing veteran Hollywood character actor Mike Kellin amidst all the amateurs was a nice surprise.

XXXXXTheres no denying this is a cash in on "Friday the 13th" but undeniably, the writer director was trying his best to take the formula is some new directions. The camp counsellours stay in the background, while the actual pre-teen campers are the stars. And they're not annoying Hollywood sitcom kids, theres something believable about the way they look and act . The male counsellours are all 'chippendales' dressed up like theyre in a gay porno, in one scene a musclehead in slick shortey shorts sports a blatant hard-on, and in another a bunch of beefy boys proclaim "we don't need the girls to have fun" and strip naked and leap into the lake.

The movie isn't good as a scare movie but it IS funny in the same campy way that "Bride of the Chuckie" was.

XXXXXIt was quite strange being in a theater full of rabid fans of a movie I'd never seen and barely heard of. During the Q&A it came out that this print had scenes that aren't in the DVD.
