xxxxYou can't skim through a copy of the "Austin Chronicle" without seeing some weepy eyed writer dropping a reference to the Armadillo, (a defunct music hall,) and belly aching that everything that made Austin such a great place to live has been destroyed by progress. (Michael Dell Vs. Clifford Antone! Celebrity Deathmatch!!!)
xxxxWhat these writers are ignoring is that although some cool things about Austin are "gone with the wind," some other, even cooler things have come along since then. The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is the best of these, in my opinion

xxxxxThe thing the old Armadillo fogies forget is that the forces behind the Armadillo and similar cultural landmarks were never LOOKING BACK, they weren't even really looking forward so much as they were absorbing what was happening THEN and NOW and responding to it. That's what cool about the Alamo, being there feels like you're a part of something thats growing and taking shape before you.

xxxxxOne of the long time waitresses at the Alamo once cracked that I was the first person in line on opening night, (May 25, 1997) and they haven't gotten rid of me since. She's only partially kidding. Some people have a deep affinity for their corner bars, childhood playgrounds, or grand old Picture Houses, me- I can't enough of the Alamo. I'm there at least twice a week, so I think I'm uniquely qualified to document "Chapter 1" of the Alamo Cinema's history.
